The Sheboygan Symphony Chorus names former student of the group’s founder as its next leader.

Fabian QamarFabian Qamar has been named Director of the Sheboygan Symphony Chorus. He will oversee the ensemble, preparing it for its performances with the Sheboygan Symphony Orchestra.

Qamar is an active musician throughout the state, serving as the assistant director of music and principal organist at St. Stanislaus Oratory in Milwaukee and specializing in voice, piano and strings as a private music instructor. He is pursuing a Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance at the University of Wisconsin–Madison where he studies with Jim Doing.

A graduate of Lakeland College in Sheboygan, Qamar received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music with emphases in Voice and Instrumental Performance, studying voice with Sheboygan Symphony Chorus founder and Director Emeritus Janet Herrick and conducting with Dr. Russell Pettitt. He also studied voice and choral conducting with Lani Knutson.

During 2013 and 2014 at Lakeland, Qamar completed a conducting internship with SSO Music Director and Conductor Dr. Kevin McMahon and conducted the Lakeland College Concert Choir as a student conductor in performances on campus and on tour.

From 2010–2014, Qamar was also the assistant conductor and organist for the Holy Name of Jesus Latin Choir in Sheboygan. Prior to his arrival in the Sheboygan area, he directed the St. Joseph Oratory Youth Choir and Schola in Green Bay from 2009–2010 and guest conducted the Stella Maris Parish Latin Mass Choir at locations throughout Door County during 2008.

An accomplished singer, Qamar has been featured as a soloist with the Lakeland College Concert Choir and the Sheboygan Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. He has also appeared as a cantor at the Green Bay and Madison Cathedrals and the Basilica of St. Josaphat in Milwaukee.

As an operatic tenor, he debuted as King Kaspar in the Oregon Straw Hat Players’ December 2014 production of “Amahl and the Night Visitors.” In March 2015, he sang the role of the First Armoured Man in “Die Zauberflöte” at UW–Madison University Opera where he will return this October to play Don Basilio in “Le Nozze di Figaro.”

Rehearsals for the Sheboygan Symphony Chorus begin on September 14 and 21 with auditions at 6 p.m. Anyone interested in auditioning should call the Symphony Office at (920) 452-1985 to sign up for a time. The chorus is celebrating its 22nd season.
