Old World, New World
When: Feb 09, 2019
Time: 7:30 pm
The third concert of the 100th Season: “Celebrating 100 Years: Meeting the Mission”
Our concert opens with Stravinsky’s witty take on “Happy Birthday to You,” our own salute to our 100th birthday. From the Old World we hear Dvorak’s portrait in sound of his native Bohemian countryside. And from the New World we encounter a short, fast piece by a Pittsburgh composer; Stravinsky’s music for a Hollywood soundtrack; and scenes from George Gershwin’s great opera Porgy and Bess, portraying a Charleston African American community.
Stravinsky | Greeting Prelude
Dvořák | Symphony No. 8
Massella | Smooth Ride for Fast Orchestra
Stravinsky | Four Norwegian Moods
Gershwin/Bennett | Porgy & Bess Symphonic Picture
